Alkyd resins are oil modified polyesters with film forming characteristics in paints and clear coatings. The oil content can vary in chain length resulting in one of three types of resin descriptions: long oil alkyds have greater than 60% fatty acid by weight, medium oil alkyds have approx. 40-60%, short oil alkyds have <40%. The type of oil used can also vary; some examples are vegtable oil, linseed oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, and tall oil fatty acids. Qualities such as drying time, weatherability, hardness, and mechanical properities are impacted based on oil chain length. Applications for all alkyds include artchitectural coatings, metal coatings, primers, wood coatings, stains, and varnishes. Low VOC coatings are achievable using alkyd resins.

When perlite ore is expanded by exposure to rapid, controlled heating, it grows up to 20 times its original volume and takes on a foam-like cellular internal structure — essentially clusters of microscopic glass bubbles. This physical transformation makes expanded perlite an extremely efficient, low density insulator. Expanded perlite provides a quick, inexpensive and permanent method for insulating masonry walls. Depending upon design conditions, reductions in heat transmission of 50 percent or more can be obtained when perlite loose fill is used in the hollow cores of concrete block or cavity type masonry walls. Perlite is a non-combustible, industrial mineral yielding superior dynamic thermal performance.
Perlite Microspheres are a very cost-effective, density-reducing filler for water or resin based applications. The Perlite HP series are available in grades ranging from 40um to over 300um – with or without surface treated coatings for additional water resistance. The benefits to using Perlite Microspheres include lightweighting, improved rheology, reduces shrinkage of product, and insulating properities.

They act as a bonding or bridging agent to improve the adhesion between the two dissimilar materials. Silane coupling agents also improve dispersion during mixing of resins and fillers, and improve the mechanical strength, water and heat resistance, transparency, adhesion and other properties of the composite materials.
UMC offers both liquid and dry grades of silane based water repellent additives. These additives protect both the surface as well as the matrix of the cementitious based material. Applications include mortars, joint fillers, premixed plasters, dry mix, grouts, and precast concrete. In addition to producing a hydrophobic treatment, it also improves durability against freeze-thaw de-icing salt stress. With the addition of water repellent additives, water uptake remains quite low even at doses as low as 0.5%.
