Diatomaceous Earth (DE)

UMC offers a variety of Diatomaceous Earth grades. Each of our natural, calcined, and flux-calcined DE grades have low density, high porosity, and high surface area properities. All of the DE we offer is mined and processed in USA.

Due to the small size and porosity, it is perfect for filtration. The pores trap bacteria, suspended solids, and some viruses which make it a superior filter aid for industries such as pool & spa, beer, wine, fruit juices, syrup, and honey. Our SwimPool DE filters dirt, algae, and amoeba down to 3-5 microns to keep pools sparkling clean.

Diatomaceous Earth fillers are used as a flattening/matting agent in paints and coatings industry. The combination of their high brightness, irregular structure, and high absorption make it an excellent choice to alter gloss and sheen, extend primary pigments, and enhance coating adhesion. It can be included as a whitening agent and extender in white paints to reduce costs of TiO2.

Acrylic resins, when combined with the hydrophobic monomer Styrene, create a versatile range of resins that provide improved water resistance and moisture-vapor transmission rate. Designing a sytrene acrylic resin at a specific Tg value is easily achievable. As a result, SA resins are durable and provide good abrasion resistance. Other key advantages of SA resins are ability to self-crosslink, broad tensile and elongation, excellent mechanical properities, ideal gloss and stain resistance. They also have good adhesion to a variety of substrates such as wood, aluminum, and galvanized steel.

Vinyl Acrylic Latex
https://icdgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/acrilyc3.jpg

With the addition of vinyl acetate to acrylic monomers, vinyl acrylic resins tend to be extensively used in interior architectural paints and adhesives. Vinyl acrylics are a good option for interior paints due adhesion to numerous substrates, flexibility, and scrub resistance. Due to their high viscosity, VA resins offer excellent peel and tack properities making them a first choice for putty, adhesives, and plaster.

In addition, we carry novolac epoxies, water-borne epoxies, reactive diluents and a full line of epoxy curing agents.

Liquid epoxy resins are used in the paint industry (solvent-free and high-solid coatings), construction industry (flooring, mortars, grouts, adhesives), and electrical industry (casting, potting, encapsulation). Solid epoxy resins are favorable in can coatings, powder coatings, solvent-borne paints, coil coatings, and printed circuit boards.

Alkyd Resins
https://icdgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/alkyd.jpg

Alkyd resins are oil modified polyesters with film forming characteristics in paints and clear coatings. The oil content can vary in chain length resulting in one of three types of resin descriptions: long oil alkyds have greater than 60% fatty acid by weight, medium oil alkyds have approx. 40-60%, short oil alkyds have <40%. The type of oil used can also vary; some examples are vegtable oil, linseed oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, and tall oil fatty acids. Qualities such as drying time, weatherability, hardness, and mechanical properities are impacted based on oil chain length. Applications for all alkyds include artchitectural coatings, metal coatings, primers, wood coatings, stains, and varnishes. Low VOC coatings are achievable using alkyd resins.

High Heat Silicone Resins
https://icdgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/silicone.jpg

Fumed Silica
https://icdgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/silica.jpg

Fumed Silica, also known as silicon dioxide and amphorous silica, is used as a filler or flow control additive in many applications. Fumed silica consists of submicron particles that fuse together to form branches of new particles resulting with grades of various surface areas and low bulk densities. It is known as a universal thickening, rheology, or anticaking agent. There are hydrophobic (treated) and hydrophillic (untreated) grades of fumed silica. Selection of grade will depend on the solvents and resins used in your formula. Advantages of using fumed silica include rheology control (sag resistance, anti-settling), reinforcement(tensile strength, elongation, and tear strength), and free flow additive (anti-caking). Applications for fumed silica are endless as it is used across many industries. It is commonly used in coatings, inks, adhesives, sealants, construction, silicones, elastomers, and cosmetics.

Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer
https://icdgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/powder-640x470.jpg

Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer is used as a high range water reducing admixture in high performance concrete, high strength concrete, high volume fly ash/slag concrete, cement grouting, and dry mortar. These polymers are used as dispersants, especially for early strength concrete, to avoid particle segregation. They allow a water reduction up to 40% even with low dosage (.2-.3%) and have excellent durability. UMC currently offers two powder grades of Polycarboxylate superplasticizer; R-209 and SP-409.

R-209 is specialized for gypsum, cement grouting, mortar and other fields. R-209 enhances the fluidity and increases crack resistance of solidified cement. It is widely applied in non-shrinkage grouting, repair mortar, cement base floor grouting, water proofing grouting, and ceramics. It can be used directly or diluted with water. It is the best option for applications requiring rapid curing as it provides both early strength and ultimate high strength. R-209 is a green environmental product up to the standard of ISO14000.

SP-409 is mainly used in the field of concrete and has high performance slump retention. The index of performance of SP-409 is the same as the index of pumping agent. Due to uniform particle size, it can easily dissolve in water and be used with ready-mix and on-site concrete. It can easily meet the requirement of building plants in remote areas with simple usage by mixing product with water.

Perlite Blockfill
https://icdgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/perlite2.jpg

When perlite ore is expanded by exposure to rapid, controlled heating, it grows up to 20 times its original volume and takes on a foam-like cellular internal structure — essentially clusters of microscopic glass bubbles. This physical transformation makes expanded perlite an extremely efficient, low density insulator. Expanded perlite provides a quick, inexpensive and permanent method for insulating masonry walls. Depending upon design conditions, reductions in heat transmission of 50 percent or more can be obtained when perlite loose fill is used in the hollow cores of concrete block or cavity type masonry walls. Perlite is a non-combustible, industrial mineral yielding superior dynamic thermal performance.

Perlite Microspheres
https://icdgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/microsphe.jpg

Perlite Microspheres are a very cost-effective, density-reducing filler for water or resin based applications. The Perlite HP series are available in grades ranging from 40um to over 300um – with or without surface treated coatings for additional water resistance. The benefits to using Perlite Microspheres include lightweighting, improved rheology, reduces shrinkage of product, and insulating properities.

Applications include mortars, joint fillers, premixed plasters, dry mix, grouts, and precast concrete. In addition to producing a hydrophobic treatment, it also improves durability against freeze-thaw de-icing salt stress. With the addition of water repellent additives, water uptake remains quite low even at doses as low as 0.5%.

Starch Ethers
https://icdgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/water.jpg

Starch Ethers are polysaccharide compounds extracted from natural plants with the same chemical structure and similiar properities compared with cellulose ethers. Starch ethers are usually used in conjunction with non-modified and modified cellulose ethers. When used in building mortars, starch ether can significantly increase the consistency of the mortar and improve the performance and sag resistance. It is suitable for both neutral and alkaline systems, and compatible with most of the additives in gypsum and cement products. Starch ethers are mainly used in mortars, grouts, tile adhesives, caulking materials, and adhesives. UMC offers a wide variety of grades including hydrophobically modified versions for higher water resistance.
